Redacted Repeater

by Matthew Johnson
April 18, 2018

The genesis of Redacted Repeater lies in the discovery of a group of Instagram feeds showcasing photos of clandestine operatives whose identities have been redacted for public consumption. The oppositional tension between the selfie (as act or object) and pixelated anonymity is potent, and magnifies the allure of the images. Further obfuscation of the images through Photoshop manipulation serves to emphasize the unknowable identity of the subjects and orient the viewer towards representational absurdity. Redacted Repeater refers to these efforts, as well as the repetitive multiplicity of printmaking, and the inane act of re-representing digital imagery on paper.
