It’s trite to express disappointment with the news environment. We know in the last 10 years local news has been destroyed – there has been a 60% drop in the number of reporters since 2000. Even big papers in big cities had to pivot, nationalize, and editorialize.
While there’s a general understanding of the issue, we haven’t designed any sustainable solutions. We’ve long lauded journalism as the fourth estate, as a civic institution. But public goods aren’t necessarily supported in the marketplace. How do we create structural support — and can we? This month we try to see a path forward.
