Small donors became increasingly important. This was particularly true for Democrats who raised $1.7 billion from small donors, compared to the Republicans $1 billion.
We watched campaigns become nationalized as donations poured in over state lines. Congressional candidates like Jaime Harrison, Amy Mcgrath, and Sara Gideon received over 90 percent of their contributions from out-of-state supporters.
Between the two candidates, $265 million was spent on the North Carolina Senate race, making it the most expensive congressional race of all time. The Iowa Senate race became the second most expensive, with $218 million spent in total.
